ABOUT YOUR TOUR GUIDE
Your guide was born in Charleston in 1958. His first ancestors arrived in South Carolina in 1792 after fleeing the revolution in Haiti. Hailing from a family of ‘long generations’ and longer memories, your guide offers stories passed down over time, instilling a genuine fascination and love for the city of Charleston. His illustrious tour guiding career began in 1980, and involved a pitchfork atop a pile of horse dung in a carriage barn on State Street. Seeking cleaner work, your guide spent a number of years in the real estate development circles, incorporating historic preservation and reclamation of the Radcliffeboro neighborhood in midtown Charleston into his work. After graduating from the Medical University of South Carolina, he worked in healthcare outreach.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Do tours take place when it's raining?
Yes, tours go out rain or shine. If there is rain in the forecast, please dress appropriately, and remember to bring your umbrella. Please note that you spend well over an hour of this tour inside a few historic buildings.
What should I wear?
Always wear comfortable shoes. Charleston sidewalks can be uneven, so open-toed shoes are an invitation for stubbed toes. In the summer, the southern sun can burn you, so wear sunscreen and a hat. Carrying a cold bottled water is allowed, and advised whenever it's hot. In the winter, keep in mind that Charleston is only 4 miles from the open ocean, and the winds can be cold and harsh. Consider wearing layers that you can remove if you get too warm.
What should I bring?Bring your camera and a bottled water in the summer. If you smoke, you must refrain during the tour, as a
courtesy to other guests. Dogs are not allowed on this tour because guests enter several historic buildings.
Can we bring our kids?
We welcome all ages on the tour. Please note there is a reduced price ticket for children ages 6-12, and children under 6 can come along for free. Due to City of Charleston laws, all guests must be counted in every tour, so everyone needs to be represented on an E-Ticket - even kids under 6 who come along for no charge.Does the tour end back where we started? How far do we walk?
The tours cover no more than 1.5 miles over 2.5 hours. Think of it like a stroll during which you'll stop several times along the way. The tour ends about a half-mile away from the starting location. Your guide will be happy to assist you with returning to the tour's departure point, or guiding you toward your next stop in Charleston.
Does the entire tour take place outside or do we enter any buildings?
What is the maximum number of people per tour?
Charleston law prohibits walking tour groups of more than 20 participants, and this tour qualifies as a small group tour for that reason.
Are the tours always the same?
Due to time constraints (appointments to enter the museums,) the route is fairly structured, but the tour can vary somewhat, depending on the topics of interest of our guests. Regardless, you will always get a great tour of historic Charleston, and learn about its incredible history.
Are there restrooms along the way?
Yes, the museums have restrooms which can be used during the tour.
Is the tour wheelchair and stroller accessible?
Unfortunately, this tour is not wheelchair and stroller accessible. We enter a number of historic buildings on this tour, not all of which are handicap accessible or able to accommodate wheelchairs. Small umbrella stroller that can fold easily and be carried when you go inside a building are highly recommended.
Will I be able to shop and buy souvenirs along the way?
No, this tour is not set up for shopping, as it is mainly a residential area that is not conducive for shopping.
Is there parking available nearby?
Tours are only offered in English at this time.
Tour is not wheelchair accessible. Tour does not include hotel pick-ups. Rates are per person. Military rate applies to ages 18+ with a government-issued military photo ID. Child rate applies to ages 6-12. Children under 6 are free. Please order online or call to order or for more information.
