In Charleston, the opening scene of the conflict was acted out by hosting the secession convention in December 1860, which led South Carolina out of the Union, the first of eleven Southern states to withdraw. Four months later, in April of 1861, the war was inaugurated in Charleston harbor when Southern forces fired on the U.S. garrison in Ft. Sumter.
