Charleston Historic Homes Tour -- Join us for a leisurely stroll along the timeworn streets of Charleston's Historic District. As you explore the architecture and flora in the "South of Broad" residential district, our expert guides will highlight the most colorful stories of the Charlestonians who have lived in these majestic southern homes.

Along the way we will visit and enjoy interior tours of Charleston two of the city's most important mansions, both of which are National Historic Landmarks. Our first call will be the Edmondston-Alston House (c.1825) overlooking the famous "High Battery" and Charleston Harbor. The Edmondston-Alston House is a repository of family treasures, including Alston family silver, furniture, books and paintings that remain in place much as they have been for over a century and a half. There is an exquisite collection of prints and other artifacts collected on Alston family trips abroad.

Via the canopied streets and hidden alleys of Charleston's most exclusive residential neighborhoods, we also visit the Nathaniel Russell House (c.1808). The graceful interior with elaborate plasterwork ornamentation, geometrically shaped rooms and a magnificent free-flying staircase are among the most exuberant ever created in early America.

Groups are limited to 20 people for quality of presentation. Groups larger than 20 will be accommodated with multiple guides. The Historic Homes of Charleston Tour is not available on Christmas Day.

Q...How long does the tour last and is the walk strenuous?
A.... Our tour lasts approximately two and a half hours and total distance covered is about one mile. The pace is easy with frequent stops and both of the homes we visit make for a refreshing air conditioned break in the summer months.

Q...Can people with wheelchairs or strollers go on these tours?
A...Yes & no. Although it is really no problem for patrons with limited mobility to enjoy the part of the tour that occurs along the streets of Charleston, the old homes simply have not been modified to accommodate guests above the ground floor.

Q...What if it rains?
A...All tours will go rain or shine unless there is severe lightening. Please call our office if you have concerns about the weather and you would like to confirm that your tour will take place as planned. We will make every attempt to reschedule your tour should you prefer to tour in better weather and have the time available for the alternative tour time provided.

Q...When do we meet our guide?
A...Customers must check in fifteen minutes before your tour as we make every effort to be prompt in starting the tour on time.

Q...Where can we park?
A...Although there is metered parking along Broad Street, it is best to use one of the parking garages. The best garage is located at 90 Cumberland Street (just off of Meeting Street).

Q...Should I tip my guide after the tour?
A...It is customary to offer your guide a small tip if you are pleased with the quality of your tour and you would like to express your gratitude for a job well done!

Q...Is a walking tour the best way to see Charleston considering that it would seem like touring by van or carriage would allow me to see much more?
A...A walking tour is definitely the way the savvy travelers tour Charleston because of the fact that the guides are generally superior in both knowledge and presentation, as well as the fact that touring by foot allows one to see the Historic District up close. Q...Are there restrooms along the way?
A... Restrooms are available at both the Edmondston-Alston and Nathaniel Russell Houses, as well as at our ticket office on Broad Street.

Q...Should I bring anything along for the tour?
A...Just a camera, comfortable shoes and clothing, and a smile!
