Held by the Drayton family for more than 300 years, this estate maintains over 50 acres of landscaped gardens. The cottage displays family heirlooms. It was built on the ruins of an earlier plantation house burned by Sherman's troops during the Civil War.

Magnolia Plantation offers the oldest major public garden in America. It is also America's oldest man-made attraction, having been open to the public annually since the late 1860s. Considered by many experts to be "the most beautiful garden in the world" for over one hundred years, its reputation today is maintained by the plantings today which offer the maximum color possible during every season. There is beauty everywhere.

The late Charles Kuralt described Magnolia Plantation as "my greatest Charleston pleasure."

Magnolia Plantation is home to a herd of miniature horses who graze the lawn behind a split-rail fence, ducks and geese that glide through the lovely waters, peacocks who strut the walks, and other fowl that move among the shrubs in the garden.

Some of Magnolia Plantation's other areas of interest are: ~ a Biblical garden which was pictured in Time Magazine
~ a street of antebellum cabins
~ a petting zoo of plantation animals
~ a restored pre-Revolutionary War rice barge
~ an enclosed Barbados tropical garden
~ a topiary garden
~ a large Indian burial mound
~ an extensive gift shop and art gallery
~ a plantation workers' graveyard
~ a wildflower garden
~ a furnished and restored slave cabin (circa 1840)
