With Hydroelectric dams now in place (many miles upriver) giving "light" to lakes Moultrie and Marion, we now paddle the untouched, undeveloped part of what remains of the lower portion of this beautiful river.

Tours encompass both the South and North Santee Rivers. Fed by Blackwater creeks and by the Oceans ever changing tides, this dynamic estuarine ecosystem gives paddlers a wonderful variety of fresh water to brackish water marshes.

Endangered Swallow-tailed kites, magnificent Bald Eagles and numerous waterfowl can be seen as well as shy and elusive Alligators and frisky River otters!

This important river was named by early settlers after the Santee tribe. But the Santee were defeated by the British in 1715-1716 and were relocated, many to the West Indies as slaves. This gave the river over to the river over to the British settlement as part of the Carolina Colony.

In the late 18th century the upper Santee River was the site of the homestead of Francis Marion, a patriot of the American Revolutionary War.
