The term "blackwater" refers to the tannic acids from the trees and vegetation around the river and gives the water a look much like tea or coffee. The water is generally crystal clear, allowing one to see the sandy bottom almost continuously. The peaceful rate of flow on the Edisto have made it a favorite for kayakers and canoers of all skill levels.
